Mary Snyder, Collage Artist

AUSTIN, TX. MAY 2022. It’s near 100 degrees out and I’m rollerblading towards South Congress Street with a Chai Latte from Summer Moon in hand. Mimi, whose place I was crashing at, had pointed me in this direction: a cool way to spend my day off while she finished her sixth to last day teaching at a nearby elementary school before summer vacation. I zoomed through residential streets and switched from rollerblades to flip flops once I made it to South Congress Street. Ready to rock (read: be a tourist with camera around neck, backpack on and blades in hand).

Now, I don’t buy art all too often, but I’d just bought a few pieces at a well curated shop and gallery called (insert name of shop and gallery that I need to look up here). I left my first stop thinking cool stuff, I guess I’ll need to pass up on the next few things I see since I just spent a decent amount of moolah. But no more than a crosswalk and fifty steps away stood Mary Snyder’s tent at the Soco Maker’s Market. I’m going to walk right by it I convinced myself for half a second. Her collage art caught my eye and I had to admire it, at least for a few moments.

A few moments turned into ten or fifteen well spent minutes. Mary and I got to chatting about each of our creative pursuits - her collage art and my music, and our balancing acts of giving our time and energy to both our creative passions and other careers. During our conversation I’d selected three pieces I thought worked well together, and not for nothing, fit the vibe of my vision for the Earl on Earth platform. Sold and to be sent from Austin to Cambridge.
